Global patient transport by commercial flights

Malteser AeroMedical offers solutions adapted to patients’ needs during transport on commercial flights. Every effort is made in cooperation with an IATA agency and airlines to get patients to their destinations as comfortably as possible, without neglecting their medical care and patient safety. All flights organised by Malteser AeroMedical are accompanied by its own medical personnel. Depending on the flight route and illness in question, Malteser AeroMedical personnel use IATA and dedicated guidelines to determine which mode of transport can be an option for the respective patient and whether the route is served by an airline that permits such a transport.

Trust in our experience and the excellent medical care provided by our professional staff before, during, and after the flight.

Transport options on commercial flights

Sitting patients

Many patients feel better if they can sit upright at least some of the time, depending on symptoms. Business class or first class is a good transport option on long-haul flights since the patient can lie down there at any time. Additional seats or an entire row of three seats can be booked on short and medium-haul flights if, for example, the patient needs to elevate their leg.

Stretcher

Some airlines offer stretchers for patients who are unable to sit. The stretchers can be installed across folded seats in economy class. A curtain can shield patients and Malteser AeroMedical personnel for privacy. A stretcher transport requires at least 10 contiguous seats, which significantly limits availability, in particular in the peak season. Rebooking if the patient’s condition deteriorates will be subject to restrictions.

Oxygen

Patients requiring oxygen are taken care of very well, too. Some airlines offer the option of booking oxygen for the flight. If this is not possible, Malteser AeroMedical personnel can bring a modern portable oxygen device. It can also be used on the ground, e.g. during check-in or waiting time or if any transit times arise. The number of patients who require a reliable oxygen supply on board is significantly higher than that of those that do on the ground due to the changed pressure conditions during a flight.. It is good to be prepared, even if they are already coping without oxygen in the hospital.

Personnel

The commercial medical flights organised by Malteser AeroMedical are always accompanied by specially trained medical personnel. A physician or paramedic/emergency medical technician will be assigned as required. Long-haul flights are always staffed with a physician and paramedic/emergency medical technician to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
